{10 tips for a perfect powder room}

The powder room. The ONE place in your home that allows your guests to shut the door and really take in your decor and style without you watching them. The one place they probably have a little snoop around before exiting. Why not make it perfection?

I've come up with 10 helpful tips that I have learned or picked up here and there, along with some photographic evidence to make you swoon! I have to confess, I have powder room envy ... my current home doesn't have one so in my next home I plan to go NUTS on my very first powder room :)

1. Don't feel restrained by your current decor or color scheme
Even if your home decor is fairly restrained and conservative, the one place where you can use the 'wild card' and go a little crazy is the powder room! This little jewel box can really pack a punch and wow your guests.

2. Don't worry about the amount of lighting
Chances are that no one will be using your powder to do up their whole make-up routine! For a mere powdering of the nose, great lighting isn't totally necessary. So get creative with pretty rather than functional fixtures, and sconces are always a winner in these small spaces!

3. Paneling adds architectural detail
I love the idea of panels or wainscotting for a few reasons: the architectural detail, the brightness {often white} that it can bring, the fact that you can splurge on an expensive wallcovering if the paneling takes up the lower half of your walls, and finally the fact that it can lengthen the life of your expensive wallpaper by prevented it from getting splashed with water if panels are placed directly behind the sink.

4. Go bold with your wallcoverings
If there is a bold print you are dying to try, this is the room to do it! It's a small enough space that you can try things that may be overwhelming on a bigger scale.

5. Use a vanity that is more furniture-like than bathroom-like
Consider refitting a vintage piece with a sink for a glam look, or customize a big box find with fabulous hardware or paint.

6. Keep clutter at bay
Keep the counter top fairly clutter free {as there usually isn't much space}. Having said that, treating your guests to hand cream, perfume, or pretty towels is always appreciated! If you have the space for it, a decorative tray will always keep things looking neat and organized.

7. Hang beautiful artwork
Even though it may seem that you are hiding them away, they will surely be a delightful and sophisticated touch to any one who discovers them.

8. Pick a unique mirror
The powder room mirror doesn't have to be entirely functional, so you can have the flexibility to choose something with an odd shape or vintage patina. Eye catching is the main criteria!

9. Choose flooring that helps your space look bigger than it is
If you can't extend the flooring that is within the rest of your home into your powder room, trick the eye with long tiles laid in a subway pattern, or if your using square tiles simply lay them diagonally in a diamond shape pattern to widen your space.

10. Fresh cut flowers makes every guest happy!
If you're entertaining, picking up a few blossoms makes all the difference in this little space. Alternatively you can use an oil diffuser to help your powder room smell as good as it looks.

Bottom line? Make a statement that is bold, beautiful and creative that your guests will not soon forget!
